Telegram spam block: how to check and remove it

A spam block is a restriction Telegram puts on an account it considers to be sending spam. The account is not deleted and keeps working, but it loses some abilities: messaging strangers and, in some cases, posting in public groups. For AI commenting this means one thing — comments stop getting published.

What a restricted account can and cannot do

According to Telegram's official rules, a limited account keeps very little:

• it can message only people who have its number saved in their contacts (mutual contacts);
• it can reply to anyone who messaged it first;
• it cannot start a chat with a stranger, and in some cases cannot post in public groups either.

For comments under posts this is critical: a channel's discussion chat is exactly the kind of public group a restricted account may not be able to write to.

Why Telegram restricts accounts

The main reason is reports. When a user or a group admin taps "Report spam", the message goes to moderators, and with enough reports the automated systems kick in.

Reports are most often triggered by:

• messages to strangers who did not expect them;
• advertising, links and invite links in messages and comments;
• adding people to groups they did not ask to join;
• repetitive messages that look like a mass mailing.

Telegram notes that moderators are more lenient with messages in groups, but spam in groups also leads to restrictions.

How to check for a spam block

The check is done with Telegram's official bot, @SpamBot:

• open @SpamBot in Telegram from the account you want to check;
• press "Start";
• the bot replies whether the account has restrictions and, if so, until what date.

If there are no restrictions, the bot says the account is free. Check each account separately: different accounts have different statuses.

How long a spam block lasts

Telegram does not publish exact periods. According to its official FAQ, a first offence most likely leads to a restriction of a few days or so. Repeated offences lead to longer restrictions.

In practice there are two kinds:

• temporary — @SpamBot names a release date; after it, the restriction is lifted;
• permanent — there is no date; such a restriction does not go away by itself.

How to remove a spam block

If the restriction was applied by mistake, Telegram suggests contacting the same @SpamBot: it is the official way to tell moderators the limit was applied wrongly and briefly explain the situation.

Keep in mind:

• write calmly and to the point — it is a request to moderators, not an argument;
• an appeal only makes sense if the account really did not send spam;
• while the restriction is active, do not try to push through it — continued activity only makes things worse;
• a temporary restriction is most reliably handled by simply waiting it out with the account stopped.

If an AI commenting account got a spam block

• Stop the account. Trying to keep posting only adds reports and extends the restriction.
• Switch to the reserve account, if you have one — work continues without a break.
• Find the cause. Usually it is repetitive comments, links in the text, commenting too often or channels where you are not welcome.
• Fix the prompt and settings before putting the account back to work: fewer comments, longer delays, relevant comments, no links.
• After the restriction is lifted, bring the account back gradually, not at full load right away.

How not to get a spam block again

A spam block is the result of reports, so the best protection is comments nobody wants to report:

• about the content of the post, not generic phrases;
• without links or advertising;
• no more often than looks natural;
• only in channels of your niche where the discussion is open and alive.

• Check before launch. Before commenting starts, the account is checked with @SpamBot; a restricted account is not put to work.
• Check on errors. If a comment fails to publish, the service first checks the account itself — so it does not blame a channel when the problem is the account.
• Temporary vs permanent. The service tells them apart from @SpamBot's reply and shows the release date or a "permanent" mark in the account card.
• Reserve account. If the main account gets restricted, work moves to the reserve — but only if the reserve passes a fresh check itself. If there is nothing to switch to, commenting stops and the owner is notified; for a temporary restriction, with the date it will be lifted.

The service will not keep posting from a restricted account — that only extends the block.
